Ryan Jones and Mallory Nicholson accepting award from Lizo Mzimba, of Newsround At a star-studded oscars-style ceremony in Leicester Square on the 4 March, pupils from Isambard Community School were overjoyed to win the First Light film award for Best Documentary.

Here they tell of the day, in their own words.

Sue Banks, Assistant Head of Isambard School, said,

I accompanied 11 very excited and therefore very loud children to an awards ceremony in London. They looked very grown up in their smart clothes which included suits and very glamorous party dresses. We had known about the nomination for several weeks and the press interest had been growing steadily. I am sure many of you will have seen articles in the Swindon Advertiser and in the Link. The children relished each new press encounter including speaking on radio from a telephone on the outward and return coach journeys.

The ceremony itself was very much as you would expect having watched the BAFTAs or Oscars on the television. Davina McCall was an excellent choice for compère and each new category had 2 presenters including Sir Ian McKennon and Kevin Spacey. The cinema was full of expectant young people…..

Tom Francis, student:

“We left Isambard at 9a.m. on Tuesday 4 March, very excited about seeing celebrities. I soon became very bored on the coach journey and ended up eating most of the sweets (sorry!). We finally arrived in Leicester Square and took pictures outside the Odeon. Most of us went to the Rainforest Café for a very long lunch. The burgers were great but the pasta wasn’t. We met Elise our film producer here. The time finally came for the awards ceremony and it was so exciting, although the lining up to get in was terrible. When the ceremony began we had to sit through the torture of waiting for our category ‘Best Documentary’, the MP talked for ages and they announced the nominations very slowly. When they announced ‘The Child and Me’ we all stood up and cheered and went up on stage to collect our award from Lizo (the presenter of Newsround). After the best ceremony ever, we went to the ‘Sound’ nightclub for a party. If you ever get chance to go I advise you not to eat the sausages, talk about spicy! We finally had to get back on the coach and make our long journey home.”

Jools Oliver, student:

“On Tuesday 4th March we went to London for an awards ceremony it was run by first light (the company that funded us for our film). The atmosphere on the coach on the way to London was very hyper, we all dressed up I wore and suit and tie. I went to the radio and I was asked lots of questions by telephone. I was more nervous than I ever will be in my whole life. I was asked what the atmosphere was like on the coach and what did it feel like to be going to London for our film’s nomination and did I think it would get this?

We got to Leicester Square and went to the Rain Forest Café.

The café was quite dark and there were artificial animals that moved and as you walked past them they made a noise. We looked around while we were waiting for our food. Some people had pasta and they did not like it, but the burgers were perfectly fine. For drinks we had coke and fizzy blackcurrant there also was lemonade and water available. For desert we had ice cream with chocolate sauce. After we came out of the café we went to the Odeon for the award ceremony.

We were very excited because we wanted to know if we were going to win the first light award. Presenting at the Awards Ceremony was Davina. We were very nervous as it was the time for best documentary. They opened the golden envelope and he said the winner for the best documentary was made by 11s and 12s and we knew it was our film and he said it’s ‘The Child and Me’. We went up on the stage and collected our award and we went out of the theatre in to the foyer to get our pictures taken. Mallory Nicholson and Ryan Jones went up stairs to be interviewed and we went back to our seats. For the best documentary it was our film the child and me!!!!!!!.

After we went to Sound for the after party. We were still very exited as we had won. We had party nibbles there. On the way home we were very thrilled and we were talking about how it went."

Sue Banks added:

"I had nothing to do with the making of the film, we have Mobile Media to thank for that. I was, however, brimming over with pride as the now very quiet troop made their way on stage and accepted their award. I missed most of the rest of the ceremony….it just wasn’t important. What a great way to start a new school. Look out for the filmmaker enrichment activity coming up next term. Next year it could be you!"
